Need your opinion: does it need a clutch?

'92 Spider, otherwise working well - has a clutch pedal that when you release to engage 1st gear (for example) only needs perhaps an inch of lifting before it engages the gear. There is no slippage or other signs of a problem. I asked the mechanic to check both pedal adjustment and pivot pin. He said neither seems to be a problem. His suggestion was to use the car (I've only had for 3 weeks) and see what happens by the end of the season. His only solution ( which he was not prepared to make at this time) would be a new clutch. Any thoughts about this?

Could be the weld has failed where the pedal connects to the shaft. There are some threads on the bb on the issue. The attached link has come good pics concerning the issue.

Question about pivot arm diagnosis

Thanks for the reply. I checked the other threads that mention the pivot arm problem. I'm not certain that my situation sounds the same. The clutch pedal returns to its proper position (slightly higher than the brake). There seems to be good resistance. Does this sound like a possible pivot arm problem? Someone mentioned an adjutment for the master cylinder at the firewall. Would that control the distance the pedal will travel before engaging the gear?
