Condition of sliding collar

I have the spare trans for the Chick Magnet apart and I have a question about the sliding collars. Are there other wear indicatrors that I should look for other than the condition of the teeth?

The spare trans that I have is a Spider trans that I got from a fellow who couldn't remember if it was rebuilt or not. Upon inspection all of the gears & sliding collars look great. The teeth are sharp and NOT shiny as I would expect for a used trans. In fact only the 2nd gear synchro ring has a small shiny spot on the outside circumference. The rest of the synchros have a dull finish. The ID of all of the collars are shiny.

From reading posts it is advised to replace the 1-2 shift collar with a new collar, move the 3-4 collar to the 5-rev position and put the 5-rev collar in the 3-4 position. That sounds reasonable enough. But in an unknown trans is there a way to inspect the collars for condition? I don't mind buying a new collar but if the collars are servicable I would just asoon use them again.

Pictured is the 5-rev collar & gear.
