Got reverse but no drive

Hey all,

had this problem for some time,just been driving the other 164 due to lazyness and lack of free time My 89' 164 auto decided to stop going forwards while on the highway one day,no grinding or exploding sounds,it just started to free rev.Reverse works fine(dont tell me to drive everywhere backwards ),but drive is no different than neutral,so am I wrong in assuming its either a clutch or linkage? Just wondering if there are any common problems that you guys might know about.
