Removing Rear cover

Hello all,

I'm in the very beginning stages of rebuilding my tranny and in sliding off the rear cover, before it fully clears the studs, it stops. It looks as it the Trunnion is still hooked up on on of the Forks.?.? Prior to sliding it off, I engaged 3rd gear as instucted in the "SHOP" manual. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks
Sprintn

Sorry... I should also add that, after reomuving the cover for the trunnion, there was nothing else underneath it... such as a "rachet gear" pictured and mentioned in the "SHOP" manual. Am I missing something?

I believe you have to loosen the shifter assembly to free if from the forks. Take the two vent/pivots off the shifter tower (watch for small parts) and it should wiggle up and out the top.

Did you take out the speedo drive?

I had already figgured it out... and i did exactly you you mentioned. And yes... I had already taken the speedo drive out.
THe shop manual says that the rear cover should only need the trunion to be put into third gear and the cover should come off.?.? It wasn't working for me.

Thanks for your reply.

Cheers
Quentin

Same here.

Just doing the same and found the only way was to remove all vent bolts then wiggle it free. BTW the problem on my otherwise good gearbox was a horrible crunching sound when dipping the clutch in reverse. A peice of the housing that the 5th gear shaft sits on had broken off and was loose in the box - what would cause this - I'm tempted to put the box back in although a proper job would be to fit a new case . Any thoughts ?
