What Gearbox sealant to Use?

I am getting ready to put my gearbox back together (transaxle - gtv6) and need a reccomendation. What do I use on my intermediate flange as a sealant? Local stores carry Permatex blue, black and grey....will any of these do? or should I mail order something else?

Marco I have used Permatex Blue to reseal my GTV6 gearbox and it works just fine ( 3 years 20k miles) Just make sure your surfaces are clean I use acetone prior to running a thin bead of sealant.

powersports sales places most likley carry Yamabond by Yamaha, which is very good. It is thinner and sticker than permatex, but it is also harder to remove.

PS, it dires fairly quickly and a little goes a long way

I use that stinky brown/black Loctite stuff that comes in the small bottle with the brush in the lid. Works very well.

Ed,
Can't recollect if it was identified as "Hylomar" type but this is what I used.

Murray,
Thanks for the pic. From the info on the card it appears that it's a silicone and not "Hylomar". When it gets fully cured does it get somewhat hard like most silicones?

Ed - yes any of the sealant which squeezed out has a rubbery texture like any old silicon. When I rebuilt my gearbox I had to disassemble it again ( a certain dummy didn't get the reverse gear on properly ) and the sealant didn't peel off like silicon. It had actually bonded to the case and had to be removed with a blade and acetone.

It seems that Permatex licensed Hylomar for a while but not any more. It was originally a Rolls Royce product. You can buy Hylomar by mail order. Google it.

Any reason not to use Hylomar? It is easy to remove with acetone or similar solvents.

Sealant for transmission cases and the like

I use a product called "Permatex ULTRA rubber gasket sealant & dressing". It is grey in color, and about the consistency of toothpaste. It does not harden, and seals quite well. I use it wherever there is a metal-to-metal joint, such as transmissions and differentials. NAPA stores carry it.

I do NOT use RTV - I find that it oozes out, and creates "strings" where the ooze shears off. Perhaps RTV would work if a) you could apply a very thin bead, and 2) let it set up before assembling the mating part. RTV makes a heck of a trim adhesive, and it does seal well, but I really dislike finding the "strings" in my crankcase.

gearbox sealant

Gray sealant aka Yamabond, Hondabond and also permatex 595 are desigened for aluminum surfaces. I have used it on countless Honda car transaxles with nary a leak as well as the 105 boxes on Alfas.. But then again there are several chemicals available to get the job done...
