dog teeth (1st gear v. 2nd-5th)

I am rebuilding a trans from a 78 spider 2.0 and 1/3 of the dog teeth on first gear are sheared off. When I refer to dog ring/gear I mean the part pressed onto the gear.

The two givens for this part are:

No one makes it anymore.

It is not interchangeable with other gears (like 2nd-5th)

I have not pulled the cluster apart yet and am waiting until I have all parts to disassemble it.

What is the difference btwn the two rings/gears and can a 2nd-5th be modified to work on 1st gear.

P.S. If you have a functional ring and want to save me a lot of agony, I'll buy it from you.

P.S.S. The female dog ring (the one that moves w/ the fork)for 3rd is worn, but the 4th gear side is fine, can I swap this with the one used for 5th gear and simply reverse it so the good side faces 5th gear and the worn side is not used?

The dog gear from 1st can be replaced with one from 2nd to 5th but you need to also install the 2 - 5th internals. See discussion at
First Gear Fix

and search the BB for other interesting trans rebuild discussions.

Regarding your PSS yes that is what is often done but usually it is found that the 1/2 slider is more worn than 3/4.

I would be very interested to learn the outcome of Porsche interchangability.

Please keep us informed.

Ciao

If they fit early Porsches, I wonder if they might be the same on VW gearbox's?
