bellhousing sealant

any advice on what sort of sealant to use on the back of the bellhousing where it meets the transmission?

or go to a bike shop and get YamaBond

That is what I have used.
the DP300 stays gumy for ever. The YamaBond seems to glue the parts together more. but I have never had a problem cracking the case just pop it with a rubber hammer.



edit: it looks like Threebond 1104 same as Yamabond

OK, i'm confused.

you guys are sealing your bellhousing ?

are you running a wet clutch or something ?

sealing the rear of the bellhousing to the transmission, not to the engine (clutch side).

I've used the Permatex blue silicone. But these parts - and the transmission halves and rear cover - seat essentially flush. There is no room for any sealant (like a gasket would) on the mating faces. Whatever you use, barely a few molecules will be left once you torque the bolts.

To keep these surfaces from leaking, just be sure you clean them really well; never let them get bead blasted while cleaning the case parts - cover the sealing surfaces with blue masking tape.

You might get away with the old trick used on 2 strokes w/split cases and machined mating surfaces: no sealer, no gasket, just a *single silk thread laid up along the mating surface like a little tiny rope gasket.

Very nice seal on machined surfaces that have little or no room for anything else as it compresses like platigauge to a brutally thin degree but will fill any tiny anomolies in the surface thus preventing leaks.


EDIT: *single, as in one thread of regular diameter and strand count, not one strand peeled off a thread.

Bellhousing Sealant

Greetings,
For trans housings, and most Alfa applications, I use Permatex Aviation sealant (it's brush on) as for the silk thread suggestion, used that on the old Maserati oil pan to block and it works well.

I use the Volvo anaerobic(sp?) sealant that the newer Volvos use for sealing the cam cover and the oil pan. You only use a very small amount as the tolerances are very close. I use a small sponge to dab it on both surfaces. you can also use a foam roller. It seals as soon as there is pressure on it. I can install the oil pan on an 850/S-70 and as soon as I lower it down off the rack I fill it with oil and can start it right away. They never leak again like other sealers may. I've used it on transaxle Alfas with no leaks at all. When I used the aviation sealant I have had some small seapage.
