LSD Avail for 101 Spider?

Recent discussion re. LSD in 105 reminded me - entering No-Name straight at Lime Rock I have a tendency to "use" the curbing. That's how I learned my new Spider has an open diff. Lots of wheelspin.

What is recommended? Locked dif? LSD? If LSD, who makes? I'd like to avoid locked diff as my MGB had & it created a LOT of understeer in some turns. Only way to overcome it was shear muscle or throttle steer. And. MGB pumpkin was real easy to switch. (How is the Alfa?)

Norm, you have 3 options I'm aware of. First, there was a factory race LSD. Hard to find and very expensive. Second, OS Giken makes a LSD which is also not at all cheap. Third, if you aren't that worried about originality, you can use a 115 series 2L rear end. In this case, you will need to weld on the 101 style trailing arm mounts and use the 2L brakes.

Maybe others will contribute some options I'm not aware of!

Hi Norm,
I agree with Erik, that the Autodelta ratchet type diff. is spendy, and trying to adapt a "Detroit Locker" to the ALFA diff. would be too. However, depending on how much "slip" you can tolerate, the 2000 series cars had a "Clutched" LSD, which can be modified in excess of stock spec. given a knowledgable engineer.....Failing that, I just welded the "Spider" or Planetaries
Solid!.............That was on my 2600 Sprint,(with 165 X 400 "bicycle" tyres) so maybe you've got grippy rubber and this answer is not for you!
Best of luck, Adrian

By the way, here's a link to the OS Giken LSD for the early cars. Looks like $1650 is the price.

Alfaholics makes a racing diff that fits in the early differential housing. Early (1600 rears are same internally as the 101's) Also not cheap.

Another option (since you seem open to suggestions) is to revise your racing line and avoid the curb technique. Maybe there is a compensation that will make up for it (turn in a tad later and apex a tad bit later or something). I have no experience with early Spiders on the track, but I have to believe that if the chassis is being upset enough to allow wheelspin from a 1300cc motor, then the chassis may be sacrificing a lot of corner speed, too, even if it had an LSD. Just my unsolicited $0.02 worth.

Jack Beck built me a 2L center section with 1600 Giulia tubes. Looks stock, works great and 2L limited slip parts are available and inexpensive.

Ahhh Bill,
But, what if we're not a 1300, perhaps the infamous 1570cc (Big bore kit) in combination with stiff shocking in the rear........Just joking!
I think Gordon has the answer with the LSD mods......and in comb. with a stiffer front sway bar and a Softer setup in the rear, it should be good for a couple of seconds a lap.(Presuming there are more than one troubling corner at this particular track!)
Cheers, Adrian

Yes, I know, I butted in.

Hope to see those cars running at the track some day. Maybe a little roadtrip to Lime Rock next summer.....

2 lter dif the cheapest way to go.
In my 750 (The Ring Car), I have a Locker.
Lots of guys where useing them in the 60s
I still use one on my street car becuase I like the direct feel Ect of all the workings...
But nobody uses them in the last 30 years because thay blow up axels ect. Loading and Unloading locks and unlocks it and if your shifting out into a long straght and still doing a slit drift the car will move a bit and you think ya Nice it didnt brake!!!!
By the way the Lockers we used where out of fork lifts full on Detroit lockers that are small and fit in a 750 and 101 rears.
Be safe, LSD shimed up for years of safe drifting.. and no broken parts
My 2 cents
Peter Batagios

Couldn't agree more Peter. My 5:12 GTA locker sits in the garage so I can still look at it, but the modified 2L has proven its worth in my 101 spider. As I mentioned, I had Jack Beck build mine and he did a wonderful job. I am completely satisfied, AND can get parts easily should I ever need them.
