spider gearboxs....a lesson

i have a new( rebuilt gearbox)did not know , untill i pulled my broken one out, took of the bellhousing( early box, i think 77-79)all to find to my horror, that my bellhousing wont fit( i have a 1984 spider) the shift rods protude from the box a lot, the later ones don't protude as much.. so what to do......got my drill out drilled a lot of holes so i could puch out a space that sort of matches my 84 bellhousing, then 1 hour work with a dremal tool to shape the area out well, test fit, dremal some more, not fun.......well got it togeather, and mounted to the motor, will finsh up the work in the mornig... is there anything else i need to know? thanks

Around '73 or '74 Alfa switched to the shorter shift rods and the different bellhousing. It wouldn't be too difficult to locate a 1750 bell housing (hydraulic clutch with the long rod opening) that would work. I've got one for $40 including the switch and bracket. How are you handling the reverse light switch? Your original sealed bellhousing that you modified had a screw in switch. The older style had a bracket mounted switch. Good luck.
