If you only need to fix 2nd gear, the parts are about $100 to $200, depending on whether you need to replace the dog gears or the shift collar, in addition to the synchro ring. Of course, once you're in there, you may as well replace other worn bits, too. So, you might be up to $500. The trans rebuild is a reasonable do-it-yourself project if you have the time, the tools and either a shop press or a gear puller.

If you have a shop do the work, including pulling and reinstalling the trans, and going completely through it, I would estimate $1200 to $1500 including parts.

Rex Chalmers @ AlfaSport charges $350 labor + parts for a transmission rebuild. So, at the low estimate you would be looking at a rebuilt transmission for $550 not including shipping. He usually has cores to rebuild so you can get a new unit and send your old one back to him. A transmission can easily go UPS ground for ~$40 each way.

When did Rex move to Michigan? I thought he had purchased a restaurant in Redondo Beach, California after he sold Omega Motorsports....although that was some time ago...

Others have covered the costs. I'll add a couple of quick notes:

If the car is a keeper, I'd strongly consider having the gears lightened. Figure around $85 per gear, the car will shift much better, and the new synchros will last indefinitely due to the fact that they're moving less weight.

Also, if you have the gearbox out of the car, think about replacing the throwout bearing and maybe the clutch while you're in there. If they have some miles on them and you have the gearbox out, then you've already eaten 90% of the labor for a clutch replacement..

HTH,

Rex and Jackie ran their restaurant concurrently with Omega motorsports; both were sold when they moved to Wisconsin about 6 years ago.

I thought they still had the restaurant a while after Rex sold Omega. Has it really been that long? Time flies when you are an old fart like me....

This I wouldn't even think of - I'd just do it (and get the flywheel refaced).
