There doesn't seem to be complete agreement about the effectiveness of doing both the drilling and back-cutting for street cars, although people who race their cars seem to agree that there is benefit. Just eye-balling the drawings, it appears that the back-cutting sheds more mass than drilling holes. I would speculate that back-cutting alone will get you 60% of the benefit, while drilling alone will get you 40% of the benefit. Someone who is quick with the math can probably figure it out.
If you have found a source for new dog gears, that would be very interesting for us all.
