Why has my 33 lost all gears

Gooday, I have an Alfa 33 1.5 boxer 5 speed manual. The other day, under load(about 4000rpm)it has jumped out of third gear with a bang. The car now has no gears at all,its like all gates are blocked. If you start the car with the gearstick in neutral position and release the clutch the car stalls. No amount of revs can get the car to move an inch,it just seems locked. Prior to this happening the car "lost" 5th gear on a couple of occasions. Any ideas? Car has done 133,000klm's

Judging from your description of the symptom, it seems that the gear selector linkage is either stuck or broken with one of the gear (maybe 4th or 5th) engaged. Lift the car up and see if you can find anything out of ordinary between the gearstick and the transmission. I am not familiar with boxer engined alfas (my mother has owned a sud 1.5ti and an 145 1.7 for a very short period of time ), but I assume that there's a rod or cable between the gearstick and the transimssion.

Hope this helps,

Hi Tiger 0529,there is a rod running along the main support beam at the rear or the box(this beam is also the mounting point for the gearstick). This rod attatches to a selector rod/piston type of set up about as thick as your thumb. The piston is fully extnded(maybe over extended) and wont return into the box hence no gears. Accessing the rear of the box is not as easy as first appeared! Any ideas?
