1750 or 2L onto 1600 trans

Howdy,

I'm considering two used motors for my Giulia Super racecar project, a 1750 and a 2000. I've been told that the 1750 bolts right up, but the 2000 will need the throwout bearing adapter and perhaps a 2000 bellhousing. I want to keep the original trans and cable clutch actuation.

Barring the differences in displacement, which would be the easiest? Best?

Also, would the 1750 use the stock 1600 clutch ? Is there something "raceworthy" available ? I've heard mention of using a 911s clutch but I know nothing further.

Thanks

Dan

The 1750 would use the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing and starter from your 1600. No special adaptors. The easiest swap unless you have a 69 or later Super that already has a hydraulic clutch.

The 2L would use the 2L's flywheel, clutch, bell housing and starter with a hydraulic clutch (either a 69 pedal assy. or a big cutout in your firewall for the hanging pedals). Or, you could use the 2L with the 1600 bellhousing and Centerline's throwout bearing adapter. There are other options like a custom 6 bolt flywheel for mechanical clutch or a custom hydraulic clutch actuated by your existing floor pedal but I don't know who does that stuff.

There's probably more speed stuff more readily available for the 2L. Check the racing group that you plan to run in to see if one engine is prefered over the other. Also check existing threads.

The 2L can use the 1600 bellhousing too. Use the 2L flywheel and clutch and get the TO bearing adapter. Then just use the stock mechanical clutch linkage.

The 2L, three bolt starter doesn't have the third bolt on the 1600 bell housing and its steel adapter plate (keep this too). Be sure to get the forward support for the starter that connects to the engine mount bracket, and you'll not miss the third bolt. Keep the 2L starter and its mating ring gear on the flywheel; check the diameter so that the starter engages properly with the 1600 mounting plate.

You also have to fuss with the exhaust manifold. The block and head are both taller than the 1600, so you can have some interference problems with the exhaust hitting the body.

Also, the carbs from the 1600 work fine - may need rejetting - but the carb support strut is 6mm too short. get a 2L one from centerline.
