Too much damage? Need suggestions.

So, I've written about some of my transmission woes. I new I needed to replace 2 Dog teeth for gears 1 and 2. I need at least one syncro slider maybe two.
I think I can flip the syncros.
Now looking closer at the reverse gear set up .... The small reverse Idler gear has the teeth completely worn flat. The large reverse gear is worn almost completely flat and the Reverse/5th gear is worn into a very rounded nub.....

Checking prices on new gears has given me a coronary. DeNoya parts lists them used on Ebay but all of their pictures show the gear with the important side facing away. When asked if they could send me a close up pic or just a pic of the pointed side of the gears I get a lame, "Sorry my camera blurs out if it gets too close"). I don't want to blow a lot of money period, especially on gears that may be no better then the junk I have....
Should I start try to find another used tranny and try to combine them? Does any body have any parts for the reverse gear lying around they would like to get rid of?
What is making my frustration worse is that crank, rods, pistons, flywheel, Clucth pressure plate and cylinders are back from the machine shop. The head is at the machine shop just waiting for valve guides. The rest of the new parts should be here on monday.... Everything is finally pulling together to get this car back on the road. It would suck to have a virtually brand new engine with a nice smooth shifting tranny only to not be able to back the darn thing out of the garage!!!!!!
Sorry/ rant/ off

Spare tranny's can be had for around $150. It's a gamble for what's inside, but you should be able to recycle enough stuff just from the dog teeth and sliders to make up for the cost.

I would put a wanted post here on the BB.
Or call your local mechanic to see if he has one,
Or call APE (alfa parts exchange) in tracy califonia

and go for it's guts.

Best of luck.

... and the spare input shaft can be used as a clutch alignment tool.

with so much cool stuff inside you really cant afford NOT to buy a few spare trannies.

Hi. My two cents worth. Using secondhand gears and sliders is ok, but I wouldnt skimp on syncros. You cant turn them around. If you look carefully on a new syncro, the angles each side are different. The shallower angle should face towards the slider. I usualy always replace 2nd and 3rd, even when on a budget. It might cost a bit more initially but your gearbox will be better for a lot longer.
Good luck.

You can flip synchro's (they go in either direction), but it is a false sense of economy because the synchro's wear in the middle. Flipping the mover does not change that middle wear part. With new synchro’s at $29 from Vick's why not replace 2nd and 3rd. A used gearbox is a good buy depending on condition. I have purchase dog rings and reverse gear sets from APE with good success. Depending on what part of the country you are in try your local Alfa repair shop, they usually have this stuff lying around. With all the time and effort to rebuild a transmission why skimp now, because it will only cost you more in time and dollars later.

The dog teeth can be pulled from a gear and replaced. Usually pull them from a 4 or 5 gear and install on a 2 or 3 (rarely a 1). Larry at APE will pick a reasonably good one and sell you the dog teeth, or you can send him your gear and he will swap. (I've had good work from Larry Jr and APE for decades!) Several others will too.

To prevent flattening the R gears in the future, slow down and be sure to touch the 5 syncro before engaging R.
