Gearbox Parts

Dear All,

I am in the process of having my gearbox overhauled as part of a total restoration of my 1968 1750 GTV. It has emerged that the casing is damaged on both halves and I also need an assortment of parts including the combined 5th / reverse gear, front middle and rear main and lay shaft bearings, the fith / reverse gear selector fork and baulk rings for 1st and second (although I may end up changing all of them). My question to the board is this - apart from sourcing a second hand gearbox and making one good box out of the two, do any of you have any of the parts I need lurking in a box in the garage or can you recommend a supplier that won't charge the earth. I can get most of the bits through the usual outlets in the uk but cost is huge - I have been quoted £225 for the combined 5th / reverse gear alone!

As usual, all info. greatfully recieved.

Cheers.

Keith.

Hi keith

It would be far cheaper to source a second hand box in the UK.

Rebuilding boxes is actually quite straight forward. You could use yours for spares. Try not to get a 1300 box, they have the short 5th gear & your GTV will rev much higher. There is also a difference in the input shaft on the 2000 box, so try source another 1750 box, either GTV or Berlina, they're both the same.

Regards
Greig

Keith and Greig,

I'm thinking that the difference in input shafts was with the change to hydraulic clutch so that part of the 2000 tranny should be the same. We didn't get 68's over here, does the '68 have a hydraulic clutch? There are some other goofy things to watch out for with transmission swaps, many of which I'm still figuring out. Something to be aware of: sometime in the early 70's Alfa changed from a long shaft to a short shaft for the shift rods. The older cases (like yours) have a groove for an O-ring for each of the shift rods and the newer cases don't. You can look at your bell housing to see which type you have: does it have a screw in reverse switch or a bracket mounted one with an oval cutout in the bellhousing for the long rod to stick through (o-ring type)? I agree with Greig that sourcing a used transmission is your best bet. You just have to be careful about parts interchangability. You don't want to go earlier than '67 (a transition year) because they don't use moly synchros and are more of a pain to rebuild. In the states, a used transmission with crunchy 2nd can typically be had for less than $200 US.

Hi,

Thanks for the info. on the various changes over the years - the 68 cars did have the hydraulic clutch and you were absolutley right, my early box has the switch mounted on a plate in the bell housing so I will know what to look out for when I get another box - ever hopeful that someone has a rebuilt one they want to go to a loving home for a small fee.

Cheers.

Keith

Since you have a hydraulic clutch you should be able to use the later transmission (up to '94) as long as it includes the bellhousing. This would not be the case if you had a mechanical clutch. I've got spare parts but it they would be too expensive to ship, I think. I'm sure you can find one locally.
