LSD preload or not

Hello everyone,
I read many thread on rebuilding a LSD (115), I learned that if I want more gripp I need to add one more friction plate(clutch) on each side and take out one with the ears(4).
My problem is with the preload thing, some think you need it and others don't boder with.
My GTV 1750 is for fast road driving and autocrossing.
Do I need it or not and how I do it?
thanks

This is how it has been told to me: Al the preload will do is just wear out the clutch plates. There has to be some free play in order for it to "ramp up". Check with Larry at APE for more info ( and to buy good used clutch plates ).

I was going to use the double plate setup and Richard Jemison - Alfar7 convinced me not to do it. He said that it would make the car a real handfull on slippery surfaces. So I got a regular LSD diff rebuilt with the proper clearances.

Setting up LSDs

One- you don`t preload the internals, Two- it is not that easy, as the floaters come in several thicknesses, and after many years use all the floaters and end disk will need changing to set up the clearance to acheve the correct "set-up" clearence for it to operate correctly. As well all the internal friction surfaces must be media blasted then wiped on emery paper so there is some surface texture back on the metal.

Or just swap a clutch disk for one with the "ears"

I supposed the floaters are like they called them in book the outers plate.
the inner plate are the clutch, what about the end disk? I don't have any in my set-up.

what I dont understand is when you set up the right clearance like you said, it's not a kind of preload thing!

ok let's says with no preload:
first I put away one flotters on each side and adds one clutch with the ABBA configuration,
if the new clutch (inner plate) is 2mm thick and I supressed one floater of 2mm, I should stay with the same clearance I had at first, but is it the good one?.

How do I set the good clearance?

André

I think my setup gives around 45% lockup ??? I got the directions from the files folder on the alfa racing yahoo group. I got the proper clearance from Larry at APE. I had to measure each "ears" plate and choose the ones that would give me the proper clearance.
