LSD whine

The car has a LSD from a later model alfa. The problem that i'm running into is a whine at speeds. Around 60MPH+ in 4th/5th gear its has this loud whinning sounds when you are on the gas. You let off the gas and it stops instantly. Just wondering what i should be looking at? Also the sounds seems to go down a few levels when you are crusing around 75mph+

Going to have my wife follow next to me in her car this week to see if she can hear it or is it just me. Also i think since the car doesnt have any of the carpet or padding it might seems louder than it really is.

Thanks

It sounds like you may have uneven wear on the crown wheel & pinion. I had similar symptoms with an axle in a GTV except that my noise was worst under light load. It gradually got louder over time until I could not bear it and I swapped in another axle. I tore down the bad diff and saw the bad wear patterns on the gears. Mine had almost certainly been run with low or no oil as the pinnion seal was leaking when I bought the car.

Whiny rear ends due to ring and pinon wear are pretty common from a number of causes including old age and high miles, oil loss, pinion shaft shifting due to loose pinion nut, bearing race movement, others.
