Spool??

Why would you want a spool? Weld up the spiders if you don`t want to us an LSD as would be the normal way to get reasonable traction to both wheels . I doubt there is enough demand to machine a one off spool for a transaxle.

Its a component that replaces the centre of a differential, removing the differential action all together.
A "Mini-spool" replaces the side and spider gears, and locks to the body of the diff centre using the spider gears cross pins.

A "Full Spool" replaces the "top hat" components of the diff centre, so the ring gear bolts directly to it, it takes the diff bearings and the splined (stub) axle ends.

Thanks la_strega_nera, and Bob (who replied to me offline). Good explanations. I just had never heard this term and could not imagine what it was. I didn't think thread was strong enough in a differential....

i might be interested. but, what im asking is if anyone heard about the process that a particular fella had made, on a full spool [not a mini].

he did send me a couple pics of it, but iv lost them since. i think he was an aussie, but i dont remember. he was a bb member...

and welding is a path iv take many times before for skid cars, and is a horrible idea if a transaxle is a little more expensive than a regular diff.... commodore diffs are a dime a dozen... or about $20 each, transaxels are far beyond that. and alot harder to replace.

and last of all... im a machinist. the mini spool in the pic would be a 1hour job on the handles [not including hardening], plus $24 at the local shop to get splined, if they have the correct broach for the job [alfa always have to be difficult, no?]. we've made them before for a fella a work that races a v8 ford cortina speedway car.

its even a cheap [mini spools], simple solution for those that dont want to spend the dollars on lsd's to go racing.
anyone wanna be positive about the idea?...

i have mig welded my diff after blowing my lsd and it is strong as. only thing is rub of tyres and loosens bolts off the drive shafts.

i arcked a diff 2 times and the weld snaped both times.

sure is good fun with a locker in my giulietta
