Replacing clutch slave cylinder
Hi.
Very remedial question: the PO of my car said the clutch slave blew out; when I push the clutch down it's very hard to puch and doesn't engage the clutch, and on the floor of my garage there is a puddle of clear fluid (I can't tell what it is). I bought a new clutch slave and hose from IAP, but....
This is my first Afla and I have no idea where it is or how to change it.
Can someone tell me how to change the slave?? Thanks!!!
etip
Also, what hydrolic fluid should I use??
thanks again.

here's the thread i used when i did this:
http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/spid...ummies-me.html
hardest [read: the most frustrating part] was dealing with the snap rings. lots of words flew from the garage during initial removal. otherwise, it's fairly straightforward once you get past that...

Use same fluild as whatever you use in your brakes. DOT 3, DOT 4, whatever. Wiggling the cylinder out can be a bit funny, but it'll come once you get the snap rings undone. May take twisting to just the right position to clear the block.

and make sure the car is properly supported with something other than just a jack when you are under it.

Andrew,
Thanks for the info.
and... I NEVER get under a car without jack stands in place. I knew a guy (friend of a friend) who died when a car fell off the jack.

I have the same problem with my clutch now.I will take mine to a mechanic but was wondering if I should buy the parts off the internet instead of letting the mechanic charge me for them?I have gone this route a couple of times before. And always after installing the part, the mechanic then feels oblige to tell me that wasn't the problem. It always seemed like a no brainer,so I am sure this is the problem this time.At first the sticking then the break down beside the road with the clutch to hard to push and the car rolling to a stop.

Around these parts of the world the shops usually charges extra to replace parts the customer provides, but it may be different where you are. I'd ask him beforehand in any case. Common courtesy and all that.

Well, I said "usually", and that's where the common courtesy bit comes in

It's not a bad do it yourself job if you have any mechanical inclination. Parts are about $45 US for the slave and maybe 15-20 for the hose (if I recall)

etip, darryl954:
Would you mind telling us what year & model Alfa you're discussing here? When darryl mentions a damper, it sounds like he is referring to a 164.

When I started the thread I was talking about the clutch slave in mhy 1969 Boat tail spider, so I assumed that is/was the model he was talking about.

ut-oh.Is this what they mean by hijacking a thread?I just typed in the search engine for clutch slave or saw it under transmissions when looking for info.
