sticky new master cylinder

I assembled my 1962 Giulia Brake master cylinder tonight, wetting the two seals with the Silicone Brake fluid I plan on using. The inside surface of the master cylinder is in great shape, as is the piston with no pitting or scoring. The new seal kit came from Alfa Parts in Berkeley. I got it all together and pushed the piston in using the rod. The piston did not return on its own. The question: Should the spring in the master cylinder in this situation cause the piston to return, or does it need the return force of all the shoe springs on the wheel cylinders? If it needs the force from the wheel cylinders, how do I bleed it?

Did I do something wrong?

Did you use the original metal holder for the large rubber seal? A friend told me they had to use a stronger return spring in lancias when using silicone fluid. It should 'spring back' just fine.

Yes, the seal retainer is in there. I will hone again and try reassembly with lots of fluid to lube the parts, if that fails I'll order a few higher spring rate springs from McMaster-Carr and try that.
