Springs: Which end is top?

Help!

I'm replacing training arm bushings, and I've done a dumb thing.
I took the springs out a while ago and have spent the last couple
weeks fighting with the bushings - getting the old out and the
new ones in.

Now I'm ready to put it all back together, and I notice that the
springs are asymmetric. On one end of the spring, the coil turns
inward. (Maybe the last inch or so turns inward toward the
center of the coil.) At the other end, the coil just terminates.

Which end is the top? I didn't notice this difference when I took them
out and didn't note which way they should go. I'm assuming it
matters, else why would they have made one end tapered? But
neither end seems to fit much better or worse in the spring pan.

???

Thanks,
tt.

The bottom spring pan on the trailing arm is shaped to hold the straight coil end of the spring. Rotate the spring till it drops in correctly. The upper end has a seat that is flat, so the upper end of the coil should be flat. Original springs were cut on an angle. Some aftermarket ones are just bent inward to make the top flat.
