1750 Spider Tyre Size

Hi,

I need some advice regarding tyre size for my 1750 spider.

The ancient tyres on the car are type 165 SR 14 - but tyre queries on the internet ask for width, profile, diameter and speed rating.

I know the width and the diameter and can select an appropriate speed rating - but what profile do I need ?????????

Any recommendations re size and make would be appreciated.

Hi Steve,
This question pops up from time to time. 165/14s are an 80 series tire. They are available from Vredestein and a few others. Isn't there a guy in the UK selling new Michelin XASs? I've seem his ad in a few magazines.

the tire calculator at miata.net is helpful, too. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

The most common modern replacement size seems to be 185/70-14, which is available is "H" speed rating at best.

There's been lots of discussion and excellent information on this subject in previous threads. Do a search under "tire size." Be sure to use the American spelling. Below is one thread on the subject:

Mike, Dan, John,

Thanks for your responses - the concensus appears to be 185/70/14.

That other thread looked a bit complicated - I just want to keep things simple whilst ensuring that the dials stay reasonably accurate and nothing starts rubbing on the body or suspension. There appears to be no problem at the front, but there's not much of a gap between my existing ancient tyres (tires) and the rear inner wheel arches (at least at the inside/front of the rear wheels).
