Steering box "plug" question

Did some under the hood detailing yesterday. In the process, noticed that what appears to be the filler hole plug came off - or was never there Now, in wiping the top of the box - could I have knocked off the plug or does it take some effort to pop it off? I looked on the garage floor and around the suspension in case it got hung up, but didn't see anything.
I think I would have noticed it being without a filler plug before I did the wiping but, I guess, it's possible I didn't. I couldn't have pushed it into the hole could I?

mine was so old it was more like hard plastic than rubber. I guess yours would have been also. I took quite a bit to pry it out with a screwdriver and it broke. now I have one of those shiny stainless pipe plugs temporarily until I find a rubber plug. maybe a rubber stopper with a slit cut around the outside to "snap" into the top of the steering box?

I doubt seriously if you pushed the fill plug into the steering box. The plug on my 1987 Veloce is clear plastic, and inside the plug is a spring clip to keep it under some pressure so it doesn't pop out. The plug is made to come out without much prying. BTW I refilled mine today with Shell Spirax Synthetic, but did not drain it first.
