Most of the serious vintage cars are running around 1200 pounds in the front. Across the pond, most run more like 600-1000.

I don't know if you're speaking in general terms for all cars.. the thing is, since Alfa's have a suspension geometry that has the spring far in from the wheel, they have to be much stronger due to the mechanical leverage effect.

So, and that's why it's dangerous to not use some kind of compressor, there is a lot more force in that spring than you might think. Each (front) spring has enough force to lift the whole front end, but at the end of the suspension arm is just enough to handle that corner.

As for the shocks.. I have noticed that the rears seem to be suddenly much softer at the very end of their range. Full soft is reccomended for rears. I turned them a little off full soft and they got a lot stiffer, then seemed to more proportionatly stiffen with more adjustment. I guess that might be a wear/age factor, and I turn them a bit past that point. Of course, pushing and pulling by hand is nowhere near a full examination of the normal forces!

One day I'll get some new ones, then I'll know if they really were bad... but they seem to damp well in bouncing car corners with my knee, as well as in driving....
