Shock Question

Hi,

I am upgrading the Suspension on my 74 GTV over the winter. The car is used primarily on the road, but I do plan on AutoX and some track days. I have pretty much decided on Ward & Dean Race springs. I figure it is "easier" to raise the car with shims if I need to than to lower it more if I want to. I am now trying to decide on shocks.
Koni Reds, Koni Yellow or Bilstiens?
Are the yellows too stiff for the street? I like a stiff ride but...

Suggestions welcome

Thanks!

I've seen reds on a few race cars.

I'm using Koni reds set to 2/3 stiff front and 2/3 soft rear, feels fairly stiff but fine for moderate road use and predictable on track.

I use Koni sport (yellow) on my spider.

I think that it isnīt too stiff. You can regulate it and then you can have a normal shock or a very stiff shock.

Before these konis, I had the koni special (red), and really, they are no too much stiffer.

The pink area shows the adjustment range where both shocks are equal in value.

A friend of mine has on his Spider serie 4 the koni sport, adjusted at maximum.

Also, I think that Bilstein (gas, konis are oil pressure) are a good option. I have a toyota equipped with bilstein and I am very happy with them

Thanks for the replies! Is anyone running Bilsteins on their GTVs? How do they compare to the Konis (or stock). I run Bilsteins with H&R Race springs on my Audi A4 and like them. I also see Dave Rugh recommends Bilsteins with his springs, Alan Ward recommended "gas shocks" too. The Harvey Bailey Kit that EB Spares sells comes with Bilsteins as well. What is the difference between gas and oil shocks (other than the obvious :-)).

Gas and oil shocks both use oil that's forced thru calibrated orifices (orifii?) to dampen suspension movement. Gas shocks just have a small charge of gas, like nitrogen, in the void above the oil to keep the oil under a little pressure to help prevent oil aeration under hot/harsh conditions.

You can't go wrong if you go with Koni Yellow Sports.
