are my limiting straps too long?

Howdy-

I'm sorting out my Giulia Super track car. The suspension is unchanged since purchase. The PO shortened the rear springs to 13" free height and lengthened the limit straps. The straps are long enough that the spring can drop out of its upper seat when hanging on the straps on a service lift.

Is this normal? Is this okay?

TIA-

I'd say that's more than a bit too much allowed droop.

Think what'd happen if you managed to get that much deflection out on track and the spring came unseated but didn't pop right back into its seat on compression. Messy, messy, messy.....

Dan,

During the restoration of my Super, the original issue limiting straps (which were to long anyway), were removed, as were the upper mounting points, to make room for wider wheels. Here's the custom limiting straps we came up with. They keep the springs on the seats at the bottom end of the suspension travel.

Dan,

My GTV had 13" rear springs, too, and I did have to shorten the limit straps to keep the springs on their seats under full suspension droop.

I also removed the 1/4" aluminum spacer sandwiched between the limit strap and body to gain a wee bit more bump travel.

And I raised the shock mounts about 1" to prevent the shocks from bottoming out.

I can't imagine why the previous owner of your car would lengthen the straps!

Shortening the stock straps is fairly easy, since they're laminated like plywood; I cut them on the bandsaw and drilled new holes with a drill press. Works just fine.

The reason people lengthen the limiting straps is that under conditions of extreme body roll and suspension loading (such as a tight autocross), the limit strap will actually lift the inside rear wheel causing wheel spin.

Yes, I suspected this.

My car, with its shorter straps, has lost about 2" of droop travel, which I feared might make the car very unstable at the limit... but it hasn't been noticable with agressive driving so far. Hmmm...

So... how common is it to shorten the limit straps? Is this a fairly common practice for lowered Alfas?

I'm not sure how else to get the rear of the car sitting at the desired low rear ride height with 175-to-200 lb -ish springs without resorting to expensive coil-over springs with "helper springs", or, I suppose, progressively wound springs... which no-one seems to offer.

How do other people with low Alfas do it?

George
