Rear Shock Cover Removal

The covers for the rear shocks are rusty and need to be removed and painted. Is this an easy removal or is there some technique that will make this easier? Do I need to jack up the car by the body to take the load off of the shocks? I intend to change the color and will shoot the trunk area.

A photo of the trunk is attached cause I know you all like photos. I also have included a side shot of the car and what I found tonight when I removed the windshield. The really good news is that there are no cracks in the dash

I will be starting a thread in the restoration area. The interior is out and the rust repairs and body work will be started. The plan is to remove the spoilers and return the body to a 74 style with Euro repeaters instead of the existing turn indicators.
There is lots of work to do and now that the temperature is warming up, I can do more in the garage.

Thanks in advance.

Gary:

Unless you have gas shocks (like KYB's), there is no need to jack up the car. The shock mounts won't fly upward when the last bolt is removed. The rubber caps on these just twist & pull off. Dismount the shock from the cover and unbolt the cover from the body. You will see two flats cut into the top of the shock stud - you can grip these with an adjustable wrench while you loosen the hex nuts that retain the shocks.

Oh yuk! I don't like the look of that rust. You may need to remove that uncracked dash if much welding will be necessary to replace the metal beneath the windshield.

The dash is coming out so I can get at the rust in the windshield post area. Need to protect the one undamaged interior component.

I will document the work with photos as I complete it.

This is a great BB and I appreciate all of the help.
