Say, Dave - your oddball tire was part of a failed attempt by Michelin to "reinvent" the radial tire. TRXs have a different bead shape and, as you've noted, can only be mounted on a metric rim size. They are usually referred to as the first of the "low profile" high-performance radials. TRXs were fitted to a number of European-brand (Ferraris, BMWs, most French makes) cars back in the late seventies and early-to-mid eighties. The size you have, as well as the 190/60H390, was also the top of the line tire for the older "Fox" Mustangs ('79 to '84).
Unfortunately for Michelin, few other makers followed suit with compatible tires of their own; none at all in the U.S. This limited replacement choices and essentially trapped consumers into buying (expensive) Michelins when it came time for fresh rubber. Consumers, being the wily creatures they are, bailed out en masse, filling dumpsters across the nation with TRX wheels and filling their fenders with aftermarket inch-sized wheels and cheap Goodyears, BFGs, Bridgestones, and what-have-yous.
Regarding your own example, as Anfanuts noted, it's probably too old to be safe anymore. 6-10 years is considered the max in most circles.
