Centering wheels on 93 spider

Hi ,This is my first post.

I've got a set of older 5 spoke 14" wheels for my 93 spider, made by Grand Prix.

When I tried one on the front, the wheel was loose around the studs and could be moved left/right ,up/down on the hub spigot, thinking the wheels didn't fit properly I tried one of my original S4 teledials and it was the same,3-4mm of movement around the spigot.

Is this normal for 105 series cars?Do the wheel nuts just centre the wheel to the hub and not necessarily the centre spigot? On all my other Fiats and Alfas the centre hub spigot locates the wheels central to the hub.

The S4 wheel nuts wouldn't tighten against the Grand Prix wheels,it was as though the studs were too long,is this a common problem?

Yes, this is normal on these cars. The reason this occurs, even with OEM wheels, is that the front and rear hubs are not the same diameter.

The taper on the lug nuts should center the wheel adequately. It does help to snug up the lugs a little bit at a time, going in a cross pattern, rather than tightening one lug all the way and moving on the next.

This is a different problem - you will need new, deeper lug nuts to correctly attach the aftermarket wheels. Make sure the lugs have the same shape seat as the wheels.

Thanks JoeCab,I never realised the difference between the front and rear hubs,on all my other cars the wheels were tight to the spigot.

It looks like I'll have to source other lug nuts.

All your other cars are newer, right? Or at least, newer designs.

Modern cars have what are called "hub centric" wheels - they center on the hubs. Older cars (or 1993 Alfas that haven't had their hubs/wheels re-designed since the early 1960's) used the tapered lug nuts to center the wheels, as Joe describes.

Here in the States, even the generic parts stores carry deep lug nuts that will fit Alfas with alloy wheels. As Joe advises, make sure you get nuts with tapered ends, or whatever shape will fit into the wells around the holes in your wheels.
