What seems to be the problem. Are the yoke jourrnals too small for the U-joint bearing cups? Too big? Not wide enough?

As a consolation if your driveshaft yoke is FUBAR, driveshafts are pretty easy to find on Ebay and through some Alfa dismantlers.

new u-joints in

Well, got the car back last Friday, and the noise/vibration is gone. Mechanic and I discussed the problem with the replacement U-joints. He said that someof the ones that came in had a slightly smaller diameter than the ones that actually ended up fitting.

They would install OK, but once the car was started and the driveshaft turning, there would be a slight amount of play in the journals. He did press the old ones out when he did the job, but could not tell if someone else long the way had hammered them out or not. He said that the journals looked pretty good and unmolested.

He didn't have the specs on it off hand, but we did measure the U-joints, and some ends did have a slighltly smaller diameter than the ones in the car. Manufacturing or quality control glitch? Or do I have a car that has a slightly non-standard driveshaft?

Anyway, good to be back on the road. Now to solve the next problem - rear end seemed to get a bit more lively while I had this problem.
