Spellcheck please

It's amazing to me how poorly people spell here and on other BBs.

Stu,

It's even more amazing how people spell in the world of business communications and even job applications!

I've also seen some punctuation that can only be described as "lacking"!

You can downloaded a spellcheck plugin for IE, though I don't know of one for Mozilla based browsers.
I look at the internet as a more informal form of communication, as long as I understand what someone is saying I leave stuff alone...after all, its just the internet

Guess it's a good thing then that Alfas can't spell.

And being guilty myself of misspelling (heck, even leaving out whole words or writing the same word twice twice), I don't take off for spelling.

As long as I can understand, then I can get over it (though I do admit that it's a pet peeve). Then again, my mom is teaching at the college level and she's got students turning in final papers that are barely legible. I blame society.

Are you speaking Gaelic now, Alex?

Speaking of - isn't your name misspelled in your signature?
Speaking of your signature - Can I have the Fiat 600? I'll drive it back from NC

Well said Alex.
Is there any way to use a spell checked within the BB? I find I sometimes have to create a post in Word, then paste it into the BB editor (most of the time I just spell badly)

I make my living as a proofreader and editor, and even though because of that I'm particularly sensitive to spelling errors, I've learned to be tolerant. Partly it's because this is such an informal medium, and often posts are put up here quickly. Sometimes by persons for whom English is not a primary language. We also need to remember that there's more than spelling involved in posting a message--computer skills and typing don't come easily to some folks. I see online communication fitting somewhere between traditional printed communication, where we try to repair spelling and grammar before publication, and spoken communication, where we don't see punctuation, use run-on sentences, and don't worry about things like split infinitives.

I agree with Ben and feel that if the content is understandable, I'm willing to overlook spelling and grammatical errors. I can't say I haven't made them myself. I don't have a lot of patience with ignorance and stupidity, but I can't say I've seen that on this board.

Bob,

Actually, I believe that it's IGNORANCE and APATHY that you may not have seen on this board. But frankly, I don't know and I don't really care

I have been communicating in print for a living (in various ways) for about 22 years. As a Naval Officer with a large staff of young college graduates working for me, I was - frankly - appalled at the poor grammar and spelling they frequently submitted.

In any event, I have also traveled quite a bit to countries where English was not the 'First Language'. I learned to speak slowly, deliberately and clearly, using good enunciation and easily understood words. I also learned to write using the same techniques, so that those reading my letters, memos, e-mails and publications understood what I was attempting to convey.

In any event, I am pretty tolerant of others, regardless (not 'irregardless'!) of background and education, computer, writing, or language skill. As long as I can figure out the main ideas, I'm a happy camper.

I suppose you're right, since if it was apathy, the post never would have made it here in the first place!

And I guess I'm as guilty as others of some stupid posts . . .

Ben,

Firstly, I only speak Gaelic when I have been drinking too much whiskey!
Secondly, no...my name is NOT miss Pelled, it's Mr. Csank!!!
Thirdly, if you can get that 600 started, be my guest!!!
