Hmmm, zis zread reminds me of zis pice floting zru the Internet a whil ago:

Quote:
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby
English will be the official language of the European Union rather
than German, which was the other possibility.

As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that
English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a
5-year phase-in plan that would become known as "Euro-English".

In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this Will
make sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in
favour of "k".This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have
one less letter.

There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the
troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like
fotograf 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted
to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have
always ben a Deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the
horibl mes of the silent "e" in the languag is disgrasful and it
should go away.

By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th"
with "z" and "w" with "v".

During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords
Kontaining "ou" and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensibl
riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find
it ezi tu understand ech oza.

Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kum tru.

If zis mad you smil, pleas pas on to oza pepl. Zen ve vil rul ze
world!!!

This may only be for computer geeks, but I can't resist to post the gem below that appeared in the Linux developers archive 5 years ago (almost to the day).

In the quote below, Paul (Rusty) Russell (who developed the Ipchains and Iptables firewall software included with the free Linux operating system) delivered a so-called kernel tree "patch" (a correction of source code for computers) for a "Trivial name typo" to Linus Torvalds (who is the reason why the Linux operating system exists) that results in correct spelling of his name.

The snippet starts with the message header, followed by an explanation why the patch should be applied, and then a response from Linus, referring to a shortage of the letters "l", "r" and "d". The fact that writing serious code can be fun is what makes this snippet a classic, if only in my opinion :

There's a serious shortage of the etter "", and we're trying to seriousy
cut down our usage of the etter in order to improve conditions in the
worst affected areas.

ettes "" an "" ae aso affecte, and may une cetain cicumstances be
epace with the ette "x" which is in pentifu suppy.

Patch appie,

That Cambridge study is quite interesting. I had no problem reading the posts by both Simon and Hans at my normal reading speed (which most certainly wouldn't win me any speedreading awards though ).

Hi Mike,

actually it should read:

Where'd be mah Alpha Romero parked at, or something like that.

When I am in Seattle next time I would really like to see your breathtakingly
gorgeous Giulia Sedan. Theee BEST color combo there is.

If you make it down here we can have a drive in the Sud or in the 90.

Happy holidays

Hans

Its all the printing presses falt! Before that you sounded it out. Now we have to type too! Also meny on these sites are from all over the world. and This is not there 1st Lang. .
Heck I can not even read my own stuff, so its very frustating for some of us who are some what limited. for what ever reason, stroke, health, 2nd language, what ever.
Spell check would be nice. My computer is so old it does not have spell check, Now thats a outrage!
It will help but not cure to have spell check.
Just today I was reading a post and did not know what a Dizzy was from our friends down under. afetr a few times I think its a distributor.
Well just 2 cents from one of the worst writers here
Happy Holidays

On some Alfas the hood lock is at the firewall, and VEERY difficult to get at. I have wired an "emergancy" release cable through a hole in the firewall into the driver's compartment on every Alfa I have had since the cable broke on a 2600 sprint I had some 30 years ago.
Yeah, us misspellers, and those who don't consistently punctuate, end sentences in prepositions, and consistenly run-our-sentences-on are a real shame to our mommas.

I suggest a new area where those of us whom were edjumacated can diagaram sentences. Me thinks it will be a hit.

I was not raised on phonetics and spelling is not my strong suit but I can usually spot a misspelled word and can live with it. But, that being said, things like CAP LOCK or all lower case seems like a easy way out for those who have somewhat of a digital impairment.

Part time pedantry

To all alfisti who wince in the presence of mangled spelling, punctuation and grammar, I can recommend the excellent:

"Eats shoots and leaves" by Lynne Truss

A great Christmas read for the part time pedant ...

Eugene

PS. Available in the UK. Don't know about the States.
