In my experience, Norton System Works bogs just about any computer down. It is constantly doing something to use memory. I learned that my ISP provides a light version Norton anti-virus, spam filtering, and internet security which seems to be much less intrusive and takes less memory.

I agree that Norton System Works is always running something or other in the background; however, I've not had any real problems with it zapping my download speed because I schedule my tasks while I'm asleep, and I've been able to keep the system clean, defraged, and bad extensions, files, etc. managed.
The one thing that I have noted that I don't believe is connected to Norton in anyway, is that AOLLOAD.exe zaps 98% and puts my system on overload where I feel like throwing the computer off the roof. I discontinue that task through my task manager and my AIM still works fine as well as everything else on my computer. So I have no idea why that file feels the need to do whatever it is doing. A waste imo.

It's the relogging that activates this file and I can tell by the performance delay, so I open my task manager and shut the file down. I do have an AOL account and use AIM IM with no problem with this file stopped.
If it's a virus why isn't Norton identifying it as a virus? I run Norton more than once a week as far as full system virus scans and it has discovered a couple of trojans and killed them that I didn't even realize had loaded as far as noting performance issues.
I've had some odd things occur as far as gibberish on previous computers because of the VRS that I run.

AOLLOAD is not a virus, just part of AOL software. The write-up that cautions it may be malware uses generic language for the sole purpose of selling detection software. If there was malware with the same name, any decent and recent antivirus and spyware prevention software would pick up that the signature has been altered.

Sean,
Only using AIM for those who are also on AIM; I don't use the rest of AOL, I hate it. I'm also using Windows Messenger, Yahoo IM, and Skype for those that use those various communication providers.

Thanks, Ruedi. You interpreted the post the same way that I did as far as it not being a virus. But it did take scrolling down and reading the longest and most informed post at the bottom of the string, which was not indicated as the best answer. I rate Yahoo answers right along side wikipedia.

I prefer iChat, comes with Macs. I used to use AIM. But since I got a new 20" gaming monitor the text is so blurry I cant read it and magnifier screws up the interface. So iChat it is then.

For text-based IM on WinXP, I use the free and open source PSI Jabber client that connects to all major IM platforms (AIM, MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, etc.) through a free gateway. This way, I need only one application with a very small footprint instead of the bloatware supplied by many IM providers.

The dead green screen is not exactly like the BSD; when mine goes all green the Alfasud is not visible; it is a totally dead green screen or DGS. Either your failure is different than mine, loading on occasion, or you have wonderful recall and/or an imagination to match the recall.

Simon,
What has changed? Suddenly, someone must have thrown a switch - speed is dramatically faster. I first noticed this today, but to be fair it could have changed a few days ago, since due to the slow speed I generally start up a window and move on to another whilst the BB site stokes up. I followed an email link this morning and the site opened up as fast as any other..........
Is this just luck or has a remedy been found? (I did try opening up the BB site a few times, and every time it was fast - no lingering on the Alfasud page).

I've seen no difference on this side of the pond. It's as quick as it always was so maybe it's something local.

Hi Simon,
I've given it a few days before replying, and I'm afraid I have to say that my last posting was some sort of One Day Wonder. Speed has been back to slow ever since, whether on my Norton protected home machine, my son's Kaspersky protected machine or my Zone Alarm protected machine at work. I just counted 32 seconds for this thread to open up. I could nearly have carried out an oil change on the Alfasud that I was looking at....
Still a great site though. Maybe an MG forum site is faster to make up for the cars being slower.......!
