Also, as I said previously, the main page with the Alfasud opens up quickly enough, but it goes slow from then onwards, irrespective of whether ad blocking switched on or off.
In addition to possible effects of geography (e.g. regional ad serving being slow), there is also the potential that there could be a time-of-day problem (e.g. server backups in the middle of the night which might be mid-morning in the UK). Are the problems you are experiencing consistent throughout the day?

Andy,

Thank you for working with us on getting things sped up in the UK.

I have a few ideas on what it might be but I’m curious what kind of ad blocker you used? I’m wondering if the blocker is still loading the ad code but just not showing it or if it’s ignoring all the ad code all together. This would help to figure out if it has something to do with our ad code or not. Also note that we have three different ad networks that rotate in the ad spaces so results may vary depending on the page content.

Secondly I have been back and forth on "no-cache HTTP headers". With this feature turned off it allows your ISP to cache our pages which is supposed to help speed up page delivery to you. Right now we have this option set to ALLOW page caching. So this is just a theory of mine that the ISP might be doing something that is causing slow page load times. If we turn the caching OFF it would create more load on the server but might increase your page load times if it’s a caching problem.

What I’ll work on over the next few days will be to make a custom version of the site with no ads for you to review. If it helps things out then we know it’s the ads for sure. If not then well have to move on to other things.

Thanks again and keep us posted. I’ll report back with a link for you to try when I have a test page ready.

The one thing that boggles me is that this seems to only be a issue with people in the UK. None of our Australian members or other regions have ever noted slow page load times which adds to my confusion.

Log In Causes Slowness

Of late the site has performed slower than dialup for me. The symptoms, probably familiar, are as follows: 1) slow screen updating after logging on. The site seems to sit on green for an exceptionally long time. More than a few times I get a "page error" in the lower left had corner. Hit the back button and there is a s-l-o-w wait to get back to the forum menu. 2) trying to bring up a post from the right hand colum almost always fails. I can usually, but not always, access a specific post from fromt the general menu only.

OK, here what I discovered this morning.

1) When I log in at the opening screen and then select forum thnings slow to a crawl and even sometimes halt completely at the green screen.

2) When I go to forums and long in I'm usually, but not always, more successful.

3) When I don't long in, however, and just view everything as a guest the forum software is much, much faster. I can access the forums, read individual posts with ease and, overall, the site works as I would expect one to work in an age of high speed internet.

4) So, for now, I'm not going to log in as a user but, instead, will just read the forum posts as a guest.

5) It appears as though the software, in this new configuration, is doing a lot more processing when people log in as users and this contributes to the slowess of the bb. This is probably the slowest site I visit on the internet. Right now screen updates are even slower than what I experienced with graphic intensive images in the old dial up days.

Hi fellow Alfistis,

Just thought I would put my 2 cents worth in. I am in Australia and no matter what time of day I log in or where/what computer I use the site seems to run extremely slow. I think that the site content is worth waiting the time it takes to load though and have found everyone to be helpful and friendly. I realize that advertising helps pay to run the site and dont object to it but most other sites I use with advertising all run much faster so I dont think that the advertisments are the cause for the slowness.

Ciao for now and happy motoring (in an alfa of course)

This Site is So Slow.....

At home I'm always logged in so I only use the "Quick Links" to do pretty much whatever I want, so I don't experience some of the loading, log-in problems that Jim described. However, at work where I'm not logged in but have a much faster connection than at home, I do experience the dead green screen and sometimes it will not move past there and I have to back out with the back arrow and re-log in again. Once the message comes up that says you're being redirected, click here if your system doesn't take you to the page, I'm usually fine. The other thing I experience is that when I click the numbers to switch pages at the bottom or top, they do not always load. I get a message that says it's an invalid command or the page cannot be found. I use the back arrow, and click on the page again and it usually loads.

I had dismissed these things as other people's problems since where I work has had significant problems lately with Vista bugs and has both Cisco and Microsoft working on patches or fixes so that log-in can be accomplished by MAC users. PCs seem to be o.k. because PCs are using XP Professional, but we keep getting virtual memory adjustment messages and the system has been much slower than usual. A pain, to say the least.

Simon,

It seems that there are a few more people who have come forward to confirm some amount of slowness, so it isn't perhaps just the UK. For your information, I am using Norton Anti Virus 2007, and I have it set with the ad blocker turned OFF. Pop ups are blocked however. I have run it this way for about 3 months now, and I had to turn the ad blocker off to be able to view certain areas of the UK Ebay site (something to do with Mediaplex I think).
As another member has stated, this is also the slowest site that I currently use regularly, and I base my findings as a comparison with Ebay and the UK Alfa forum alfaowner.com, who many of you are familiar with. It isn't as though it's on a dial up with Windows 95, but it is just noticably slower. Let's look on the bright side though - it's worth the wait! If you look at some of the threads in the Spider section, you will see that it has saved my sanity on more than one occasion........
