Search Criteria
Simon, I launched a Search for "alfa romeo series 1 spider" (lengthened twice) and it was rejected as not meeting the 3 word minimum search criteria. It did this to me twice yesterday on different searches. Any ideas? Thanks, Bruce

I think it's the three letter search criteria limit you ran into. I've run into that a few times as well searching for things like "QV" and whatnot.
Any good reason for this limit, Simon, or can it be removed?

The 3 is refering to the minimum word length - 3 letters, not 3 words. The number "1" doesn't meet that criteria. Try "Duetto" or "roundtail" or just "series spider". I expect you'll want to narrow it down a bit though.

Slow in Texas . . .
I guess I don't get it, what's not 3 words or minimum three letters per word about this: "alfa romeo series 1 spider" (4 words with 4 letters minimum in any word).
This seems like a silly rule when you are looking for posts on "series I spiders" which is pretty specific. Who cares if it is 1 or 2 words with less than 3 letters. .

"1" is not three "letters"...
The 3 letter limit exists because it would be extremely taxing on the server to look for two letters... Perhaps a solution would be for the "package software", for which Simon has a license to use, to be upgraded to allow for a search on a string of characters such as "series 1". Problem is, character string searches are also taxing on the server...
Personally, I don't see how "series 1 spider" would be a very helpful criteria, as this would pull up just about very post/thread related to these model cars. I think a much more narrower search criteria is needed, which could be done by adding more specific "key words". For example "market value", "suspension", "engine bearing", etc. This also brings up the question: What exactly was the search looking for? (Certainly not every post for a series 1 Spider, right?)
Best regards,

In Advanced search mode, I'm looking for a folder/thread on photos (folders/threads) of Series 1 Spiders, if it exists. I noted one for Series 2 Spiders and did not care to look through 122 pages. Not brakes or engines, etc. If a search engine will not do this simple task, then it's not helping much.
That's why with our big infusion of recent cash, I put this post in suggestions. I am familiar with search engines. I do gather that the search engine does not want ANY word less than three letters? Hence no numbers? Is there a post on how to use the search engine? Compose that search: "search engine". If a search is too specific and you rule out possibilities.
All - Thanks for the suggestions. I'll cobble away at it. Bruce

Bruce,
There really isn't much on the search engine, except a tiny blurb in the FAQ... I don't recall seeing a specific thread on the series 1, but if you limit the advanced search to "titles only", and use combinations of key words such as "pic"/"picture"/"pictures"/"photo"/"photograph" with "spider"/"spiders" I think you'll find that it works pretty well. At least you will see reasonable results, although I didn't see a specific thread for that particular series.
Best regards,

Thanks Enrique for your patience with me on this. You are a great source of super info on the BB and I respect your and other true Sr. Members views and knowledge immensely. Tweaking the search in due course if for Simon's "To Do" list I hope.
My end game is: since Series 1 Spiders seem to be so popular recently (as evidenced by inquiries and sales figures), perhaps I'll start a Series 1 photos thread. The one with 122 pages is getting a bit unweildly now - too unstructured to be of use. Looking at many and close-up detailed pictures really helps one to see how a proper car should/could look and be configured. The dialogue that spins off some threads can be more important to the non-starter than the root thread topic (hijacks). An open thread to discuss "correct" or "stock", or "OE" for Series I based on many detailed photos would let us see some nice cars and, moreso, understand what they might have looked like before PO's and time took their toll. Not to say that mods are necessarily bad, just not perhaps OE if that is an objective. One can also sample and discuss tasteful or other mods. Just knowing what is and is not OE is empowering to owners. Tks, Bruce

Thanks for those nice words, Bruce. A great source of knowledge, at least for me, is seeing so many good and original cars in person. For that you really can't beat the AROC. I grew up with the series 2 and later Spiders, but if it weren't the AROC I would know hardly anything about the series 1 cars.
I'll share an interesting anecdote. Last year, the week before the AROC national convention which was held in August, a friend of mine asked me if I would accompany him on a 5 hour ride each way. The purpose was to take some older Alfa parts that would be offered for sale at the convention. On the way up, this friend of mine asked me if I had ever read the Concours Manual. He had not attended a convention in years and certainly not since the Manual was published and now that he was going, he planned to enter his '68 Spider in the competition. Well, he never got around to reading the Manual, yet his Spider took first in class with a score just a few tenths shy from perfect. He's an original owner, and while he does drive his car, he's always kept up with wear and tear. His breadth of knowledge is amazing, and there isn't an inch of the car that he doesn't know how to refurbish, with the correct part or material. The "preparation" that he did for the convention competition wasn't anything more than what he does to keep his car "nice"!
I think a thread as you describe would be useful and interesting. I would certainly enjoy such information and discussion. I would also suggest that if people go off-topic you simply chime in and ask them to remove their posts explaining that it is to keep the thread useful. I've seen thread starters do this, and people do respond to their request.
Best regards,

Would be nice if this were changed. My search attempts have been foiled manytimes (eg can't search S4).

Bump. Search
If the post is called "Series 1 Spider" (and I doubt anyone woiuld call it "Series One Spider"), how do you find it using the current "three letter" (and presumably no numbers) rule? Search engine fails.

Right. The search engine here has that shortcoming. Very frustrating.

Just use Google to search the site. On the Google page, type your query and then add the phrase "site://www.alfabb.com" (no quotes) at the end.
