Polishing the cam covers

When I see those beautiful under-hood pictures with mirror-like cam covers, then compare them with the dull pewter-like appearance of mine, I wonder how the detailers did it. Anyone know their secrets?

I go for the OEM look, which is still very nice, but is not the highly polished finish. Nonetheless, let me share what I do... I take the cam cover off, and wash it with soap and water using a Brillo pad. You can do this safely as many times as you want. Then, you can polish it by hand, or with a machine if you want depending on how polished you want it. If your cam cover has a rough finish, then you would have to sand it first in order to polish it to a high finish.

Best regards,

I remember my '69's cam covers came out of the factory shiny like a Jag's. '79 was rather dull. '91 ultra-dull and pitted. Ché tendenza triste!

Bill, I would post this question in the detailing sub-section or the spider/gtv/etc technical section to get more answers. This section is mostly dedicated to site improvements.

Cheers and welcome to the forum.
