Logoff timer

Please take this as constructive input. The software you are using has become quite ubiquitous on the web, so I have a lot of familiarity with it. However, very few have implemented the timed logoff function, and no other car boards I use have this. I honestly don't see what purpose this serves and request you disable it. I've lost many posts that I was composing that due to distractions was unable to complete before the timer expired.

I agree with gr8sho. When you want to look up a word (English is not my first language), check some facts or simply want to think your answer through, you are nearly always presented with the login screen after clicking "submit".

The logoff timer is at the very least too short.

I have the same difficulty and have requested the same by PMing. If and until something has been changed I highlight and save while I'm writing. Another thing that I've found that works is when you log back in use your back arrows and you can pick up your post where you left off. Sometimes it will be usable there, but to be safe copy and paste to a new post and continue. I agree a pain, but it works and beats starting over.

One other method I use is writing it in Outlook and then pasting it in as a total product where you can then hit preview or send within the time limit. Outlook also gives you the benefit of spell check.

On an aside, we use log-out timers to control Internet use in the library setting, however, there are a specific number of warnings as your time is expiring to save or lose your product. Of course, there are those who don't read, kind of strange for a library, ignore it etc. and then complain. A no win situation, imo.

I don't have this problem at all: I get logged in automatically anytime I point the browser at AlfaBB and stay logged in (no timeout) -- on at least 3 different computers using Internet Explorer 6.0. On the login screen, I have the "Remember me" checkbox next to the username checked.

Therefore, I suspect that the problems you encounter are not server related, but browser related. Possible causes are either a corrupt cookie, or cookie settings in either your browser and/or antivirus software that must be forced explicitly to accept cookies from AlfaBB.

The corrupt cookie issue is easy to fix: Log in, log out and then log in again. The explicit logout (rather than a timeout) clears all cookies from AlfaBB.

The browser/antivirus software issue depends on what software your systems are using and you would have to tell us more about that.

I experience the timeout feature whether I'm at home or at work, so I experience it on at least 5 different computers in the same fashion. At one work location I have to use IE because Firefox is not available, meaning if I download it it goes away when I log-out, and I still am caught in the logoff timer routine.

As far as logging in and out solving the problem, I always log-out when I leave the site and have to re-log in when I return, but the logoff timer still blocks my continued access after a certain amount of time.

I'm apparently more password conscious than you are. I never select any boxes that allow me to automatically log-on to my computer or to any websites or accounts that I visit. To me that's an invitation for anyone who gains access to my computer to have access to everything else. In my case, they are going to have to work for it.

As far as browser use; I use Firefox and have multiple tabs open at all times. One reason I use Firefox is because of IE's continual pop-ups, but more than that so that I can have the bulletin board open on two tabs, the tab I'm working on as far as a post, a separate tab to review something I want to include correctly in the posts that I can no longer see on the bulletin board, and another tab for Google to search for information if necessary etc. I generally have a miniumum of 6 tabs up at a time, where I can just click across them.

As far as virus software, I use Norton Systems, not just the anti-virus software at home; one work location uses McAfee and I'm not sure what the other one uses.

Same here. I use Firefox with multiple tabs open. It accepts the alfabb cookies without any problem. I have set it up to accept all cookies originating from the same domain I'm browsing to. There's no AV software on the Mac at all.

I also never tick the "remember me" box because of security issues.

I took a look at the cookies set by alfabb.com, and apart from one called "bblastactivity" containing a zero, there's nothing indicative of a browser related logoff timer.

So if there's no logoff timer setting centrally on alfabb, I'm blank.

I don't buy any of that cookie business. it is specific to this BB. if the forum owner responds, that would be great.

Here's a solution for those of you having this so called timeout problem. Compose you message using MS Word, or someother word processor, and then when your ready to post to the BB, copy the text out of your offline document, and then paste it into your BB message. No more timeout problem.

Geez, such controversy for such a simple problem. Either fix it or not. It was a simple request and I don't need people telling me how to work around it.

To be honest, I didn't know anything was broken. This is the first time I've heard of a 'timeout'. How long is the timeout? I can stay logged in for hours without a problem.

A mille sette e cinquanta. Nice!

I haven't timed it, but it looks like somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes.

I like the others have never experienced a time out on the BB. I often have multiple IE sessions running at work. One is dedicated to the BB. It is open for 8 to 10 hours at a time and sometimes I don't get back to it for 2 or 3 hours and I'm never logged out. The only time I experience a "time" limitation is if I'm in the middle of a "view all messages since last logon" and I leave it and come back an hour later I loose the "view unread" function.

I have a program to do autologon. I'm wondering if not selecting "remember me" causes this to happen. So, I've decided to login with that checked and see if the timeout stops happening.
Most other other BBs behave exactly as you describe.

Okay, selecting "remember me" is what needs to be done. Setting the cookie avoids the autologoff. I guess I never noticed this with the other fora since I had hit the "remember me" check box. Thanks to all for their input.
