The login seems to be OK now (so far). I am not using a firewall or anti virus (Macs don't need them), and I don't have popups blocked at this stage. Thanks for your help.

Macs don't need antivirus? You may want to rethink that. Just because it's easier to write exploits for MS platforms doesn't mean they don't exist for other platforms. Computer security is a process not a state. Whenever one feels safe, one is being cocky and therefore vulnerable.

Back to the topic:

If you're confident enough to get into some fairly advanced networking stuff, I suggest you download and install Ethereal (2 Mac versions are vailable from the download page -- a quick glance indicates that the Fink Project binary is probably easier to install than the Darwin Ports) and take a trace of the interactions between your computer and AlfaBB. The trace will show exactly what goes on at the Ethernet level (on top of which is TCP/IP and HTTP). I can't help much with setting up Ethereal on a Mac, but I'll analyze the trace for you if you send me the file via e-mail.

Sean,if you have to pay for the service, how can it be free? I haven't visited the site to check it out myself, but you confuse me.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I have discovered at last that the problem isn't with Alfabb, Safari or my computer, but something to do with my phone line or modem. I have just successfully uploaded a picture at work using my powerbook from home with no problems. I am trying a different modem tonight at home.

I'm glad you're making progress. Sometimes, isolating a problem is the hardest part. There is a good chance that your computer and modem do not negotiate the speed properly (10 Mbps vs 100 Mbps; full-duplex vs. half-duplex connection), which may lead to packet collisions and packet loss -- and therefore connection time-outs.

I don't know Macs that well anymore, but there may be a setting that allows you to override the auto-negotiated settings and force the computer in to a connection setting that works (10 Mbps half-duplex is historically the oldest interface spec and has a good success rate without much performance loss).

Trying another modem is a good idea. You may want to change the cable between the computer and the modem also. Often, flaky cables with badly crimped connectors can create problems, too.
