burning oil section

I suggest a section...maybe next to the "off topic" scetion... where flame contests, peeing contests, name calling and general rudeness can be moved to. That way there is a place to argue and be ugly about it and that if there is some good info in the topic said info can still be found.

An idea, yours to decide if its a good one.

My unsolicited 2 cents:

You mean like a 'rant arena'?

Previous experience would cause me to say 'not unless you wanted to actually increase the problems'

Having a place just built for that stuff leads to that: people deliberately getting in there and deliberately being ugly toward one another.

All well and good, except it creates animosity amongst members that can (and will) spread to the other subsections of the forum and eventually turning the whole place into one big feild for assault and attack.

Then there's the point at which such an arena gets into topics that are not really acceptable for discussion on whatever level, yet when staff will try to step in and shut down such topics, everyone will get into a 'freedom of speach' kick along with attacking staff. (particularly if Dave's topic that's simular to Bill's gets to stay while Bill's has to go)

Just a huge can of worms filled with heartache and angst that will do little more than create rifts that would not normally occur if there wasn't a dedicated 'rubber room' for people to bounce each others heads around in.

I've seen it done successfully here The FAL Files Forums

I've seen where some folks can be civil and disagree and some can't. It depends on the particular crowd I guess.

I would vote against having such a section... Quite frankly, I don't come to the BB to get into pissing contests, nor am I interested in reading about them. Sharing the Alfa experience, in a civil manner, is what makes this BB valuable. Anyone can easily and efficiently report any post that in thier opinion doesn't observe a minimum of decorum, and then the moderators can decide on the appropriate action, if any...

Best regards,

Where?

All I see that's remotely close is the "General Non-Firearms Discussion" subsection, which would roughly equate to the "Off Topic Talk" subsection found down low on the page here.

But naydinna see anything like a dedicated rant arena there.

No matter, I've seen too many forums go to hell in a handbasket because of such sections. Places that had mature adults, places that had little kids, places that had educated students, etc., etc., etc.

Eventually it all goes down the pipes because the forum host has given a place for the seeds of evil to take root, prosper and spread like a choking vine throughout the forum as a whole.

Your speculation as to what could happen is exactly what did happen when the BMW M/C club forum tried it. My opinion then, and now, is that it is a bad idea.

The portion of the FAL Files that I refer to is "The Basement" and is all the way down at the bottom of the lead page.

With the 'rant' section you don't get the free speech issue because the topic remains open....it just gets moved to the 'rant' section by the admin/ moderator. If the warring factions want to continue being jerks that is where it happens, not in the midst of regular subject areas. The information remains accessable by search because it wasn't completely removed from the forum. In the meantime I don't have to be insulted by the personal attacks made by board members who can't discuss things and disagree without getting in a fight about it.

I'm just thinking of a place to put a topic that has gotten out of hand (somewhere over there) that, if I really want to, I can wade thru the mess and read, but isn't in the main line of civil conversation that is the norm here.

Here's me 2 cents I start my 164 w/ 200K on her & she lets out her little puff of oil when she starts. As do I everyday. Perhaps if we we let our little puff of oil out in the morning we wouldn't be makin' threads like this.
