Saftey Related Forum?
Quote:

Allot of issues people are talking about could affect safety. I really think people need to be aware of the potential of what they are doing. When you get people telling others to modify any safety related system I think that should be somehow redirected or linked to a safety forum discussion

I recently got this via email and wanted to know what the rest of you think.
Is this something you guys think would be useful on this site? I can easily add it as long as the collective thinks there is a need to do so. Please share your thoughts on the matter.

Simon,
Many of the things that would go into such a forum, also go within existing forums. Are you suggesting double postings?
I actual prefer the solution that Jes (AR4me) uses and you can see it in his legendary thread "Roxanne - Budget Milano....". In his signature file he includes the following line: (Repeating what I suggest or do is at your own risk - be critical)
This is just my opinion.

I think we've got enough sub-forums already, personally.
We're big boys and girls, I think. I mean, *anything* you work on car-wise is going to involve safety to some extent. Is everything involving brakes, for example, going to get moved to this forum?
If you're personally worried, I'd just add a disclaimer on the site.

It is sometimes amazing what some consider dangerous is considered normal practice by others. At the same time, we now live in a very litigious society. That considered logic by some, requires a "warning" for others. My son bought a pocket knife yesterday and I was quite interested to note the packaging was covered with warnings that the sharp edge was, in fact, sharp, and could cause unintended "cuts or other serious personal injury" if not properly used. Now, who would have thought that?
Safety related issues probably are best left to individual choice. If not, much advice would vanish from the BB for fear of some legal consequence.
I do not feel the individual that spills hot coffee on themselves should collect any financial reward for doing so. Life is full of risks. Individuals must assume responsibility for personal behavior. I agree with Tom, above, that a general disclaimer is wise, and it should be left at that. This IS, just my opinion.

I'm a little confused. I agree that there isn't a need for a forum to tell people that they shouldn't get under their car it it's supported only by a scissors jack, or that they should disconnect the battery before removing the fuel gauge sender. But Simon's original post is referring to attempts to "modify any safety related system" which I'm taking to mean a forum to discuss things like seat belts and air bags. Am I correct?
I can almost understand why someone might want such a forum. I've been attempting to re-create the Klippan clip-on type belts that included a shoulder strap, and I'm amazed at the dearth of information on the net about rebuilding seat belts. I've got the appropriate webbing on order, but I wanted to know what the correct type of thread to use might be, not because I'm going to sew them, but because I want to make sure the upholsterer or whoever I get to sew them uses the right stuff. I actually had one seat belt supplier tell me that they couldn't tell me what the correct thread is because it would be a liability issue for them. Huh? I mean really, if you tell me there's uranium in an atom bomb, are you liable if I actually go and build one? At any rate, I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing the original requester had in mind, and if so, whether it rates a separate forum, but I think this is the sort of thing intended, rather than common-sense, "don't wear a necktie near a running engine" kind of posts.

When I read the text Simon quoted in his post above, I got a splitting headache that lasted for almost 2 hours. I rarely get headaches, but these words did it for me and I consider the content harmful. I think messages like these should be flagged or redirected or linked to another forum. May I suggest "Things that hurt when you think about them", "Why there is no insurance for stupidity" or "Messages from people who like to create work for others" as possible forum titles?

Safety issues forum
As someone with a car that is heavily modified with safety-related hardware, I'm always interested in what people have to say about track-car safety preparations. Trackpedia.com has a safety-specific forum that I loosely follow: Safety Issues - Trackpedia Discussion Forums
If the emphasis of a new sub-forum here is on something like that (racing/HPDE car safety preparations), I can't see why it would be BAD to collect it all in one place.
