Conduct on the BB

In light of how people were spoken to in a recent thread... I thought I might start a didscussion on how we think we should conduct ourselves... and how we might expect to be spoken to... or replied to on this BB. I think the problem with a lot of BBs is that since people aren't having a face to face interection, some think it is okay to just let lose and let their "Id" of sorts start talking. It sometimes seems as if, since poeple are speeking from behind a shield, of sorts, that they are not accountable for how they act or what they say. Is it possible to get people to treat each other on a BB the same way that they might treat them... say over coffee or drinks???? We may not always agree with what someone is saying, but there is usually a civil and constructive way of getting your point across.

Just a thought...

Is it in what people say (or type) or in how one chooses to interpret it we should place our attention?

Certainly both. However I can control what I say but not how someone might take it, so I'll focus on the former.
MA used to have on their inspection stickers: "Courtesy...Its no accident"

While AlfaBB's Terms of Use are weak with respect to not explicitly stating what users can or cannot do, this (in my unqualified opinion) does not pose much of a problem. Most "Terms of Use" documents I've read only state the obvious: Be polite and don't break the law. I think most of the general rules of the Usenet netiquette that define socially acceptable behavior in newsgroups apply to AlfaBB as well.

The AlfaBB can also expect that users are bound by the "Acceptable Use Policy" agreements that are part of the contract they sign with their Internet Service Providers (ISP). These agreements usually also state the obvious: Be polite and don't break the law. For example, read this.

Furthermore, don't forget that the AlfaBB has three moderators. If somebody is too far out of line, they can cancel posts, threads, and/or even ban a member at their sole discretion. There are people who have been kicked off the board either because they were abusive to other members or did not respect the intended use of the forums.

Yes... I realize that there are moderators... and I assume that you would have to be pretty volger to get removed... but I was trying to focus on common courtesy. Although from what I have experienced... most on this site are great. I've just notice that repies to some's postings, or opinions get blabbed out in such a way that I have a hard time believing that those who are spouting in such an obnoxious manner would act the same way if we were all together trying to have an enjoyable conversation. But then again... it is hard to see where someone is coming from due to the fact that we cannot see the grin on their face as they are saying it, or hear the tone with which it is being said.

If I see someone getting picked on, like in a former newbie thread, I'll voice my opinion. Its not fair to scare people away from this board.

One thing thats annoying is that many people think Alfa is on the right hand of God. I'm religious, but there are more important things than Alfa. Also, there are faster and better and more powerful cars than Alfa, but its the personality and design these cars have that I like...

You mean it's NOT!?!?!?!?

Back on topic... I think that as a community we can take care of our own and ourselves. If someone crosses the line then they can be dealt with - firstly stick up for yourself rationally, people will ignore them, or ask a moderator to "off" them. Where is the line? Well, because we are so multi-cultural and so individual (hey, we're Alfa owners!) then we can't write down those rules.

So, as a guide, make liberal use of smilies and if things get silly... STOP! Go and make a cup of tea, take a few deep breaths, tune your carbs, and then come back and say sorry amd carry on.

This BB is pretty "self-moderating". In the time that I have spent here, I have only felt that there was one 'troll' who had to be kicked off...and he was.

We see worse things daily on the tv then some of the posts here including my own which I now have tonned down a notch or two. Simply because I enjoy this site too much and don't want to get kicked out. That's enough motivation for me to be a good Alfa-75-Man.

Alex hmm the troll posting long winded and not necessary for me....I behave promise.

Elite 38868 I could agree more some people do believe Alfa is on the right hand of God and it is a little sick. But, those same people are required because they have Alfa knowledge.

Oh by the way God has the Alfa on the left but his favourite car is the 2002 Camaro SS 35th aniverssary convertable 6 speed. I know this because he's seen on the Camaro forum chatting up a storm.

Okay time to be serious love this site starting to see some pretty cool people and posts. Including yours for writing what I believe as well.

Quote: So, as a guide, make liberal use of smilies and if things get silly... STOP! Go and make a cup of tea, take a few deep breaths, tune your carbs, and then come back and say sorry amd carry on.

Love this quote from Cucinado I've posted some things that maybe on a good day I wish I hadn't. But we have to respect other peoples feelings like the guy who called me a whiner......^^(^#$%^^^&^&** Didn't bother me!@%$#^$*&)$&*$( Nope not me.

My biggest regret I don't know when this forum was started but wish I was there from day one. Now that I'm here I will gather and learn what I can and try not to step on anybody toes. Accept the guy who started the thread what shoes you wear? In response to what you listen to on the radio? If I did that on the Camro forum ...lets just say maybe I should drive a pink caddy. Oops did I offend again...If it was good for the king of rock guess pink is okay with me.

Anyway back to the point:Some negative comments about my posts nearly scared me off. Even though I didn't really belive the crap I was writing it pissed people off. I don't want to do that to anyone.

enough said too long sorry.

I believe that the BB has been running very well, with virtually all posters being extremely courteous and friendly. Like Alex posted, there's only really been one member (that I know of) that's been shown the electronic door.

Simon and Anthony have done a great job of moderating.

We've got a great thing here. Let's keep it friendly and informative.

There are a couple of things that irk me personally a little bit:

1. Not using the search function as a first resort to find previous threads on the question at hand. It gets a little tiresome sometimes to answer the same question over and over again.

2. Using the BB as a substitute for spending $20 on a repair manual. It's great to help novice mechanics learn more about their Alfas, but the manual should be read first, then questions asked. This does not apply to any questions about SPICA. A good comprehensive SPICA guide doesn't exist and I'm happy to answer any questions on that. The SPICA Benchcheck Guide took me off the SPICA Theory of Operation Guide for a while, but I'm still working on it.

Hey John,

I thought that YOU were writing that comprehensive SPICA book!

As for me, the best advice I give SPICA troubled guys is:

a) Hmmmm...well, I suppose I could find you a nice set of Webers!
b) Have you considered upgrading to a Motronic system?
c) They ALL do that!

Is that enough "smileys"?
