Ed,
I purposely just provided numbers, without commentary, since I think it's really up to the moderators to elaborate on BB financial issues. I have never spoken to any moderator about this. I happen to know something about technology and associated costs, so I do have some basis for understanding what it would take to support a site, but please keep in mind that these are just general and very personal comments...
You may recall that I had posted a comment about how unfair it was for our moderators to subsidize the BB by paying from their own pocket for something that we all use. I am confident that we have cleared that hurdle with the subscriptions, so at least that is no longer a concern. Regardless, it does cost money to maintain a site with the number of users that we have, the functions that are provided, and the amount of data that is stored. While the current $$ should allow for a decent set of hosting services, and hardware/software upgrade expenses, I don't see how there would be enough money to pay someone to administer the BB. Thus, I'm sure Simon is still doing everything himself. This is certainly a vast improvement from a year ago, but I am sure the hope is that at some point there is a much larger budget that allows for the all BB tasks to be fully outsourced.
Best regards,

I think these are shamefully small numbers -- both for paying subscribers and dollars raised.

The other thing that cannot be accounted for in just the numbers and straight amounts is how much of this will be only for this year; in other words, the amount of money could be inflated over successive years. I'm assuming Enrique's figures are based on a one year subscription. However, if several paid for more than a year, they would not be up for renewal the following year, therefore, additional subscriptions would have to be generated to cover those costs and net the same amount of income.
So while it may look encouraging on the surface, it may not actually be so.

I think you would find that "real" membership here, meaning those who visit as a single member regularly, is relatively small. The majority of the list is probably those who came once and left for many reasons, or those with more than one identity since it's free and easy to screw with others this way.
As others said, the economy is making things tighter for most folks, and I would expect donations and the real membership of most all non political organizations to shrink, unless Acorn expands their goals or the US makes Alfa ownership a requirement for citizenship. Both a real possibility these days.
What really ticks me off is the 10 second search wait message that usually occurs now when I use quick link to todays posts, and I assume it is because of google ads.

I do not get the 10 second search wait message when doing as you describe on any of the three computers that I use regularly, two configured exactly alike and one with a few differences. However, I do get that message when I attempt to execute a second search with the search box, as a general search or member search, with a different or modified query. Apparently, I type faster and hit enter faster than the search delay allows. Then I go through the process of the countdown from about 15 down....I agree it is frustrating.

I get it the first search most of the time and as a "Gold" member, it is getting on my last nerve. It is almost 75% of the time and with no apparent reason.

you guys and some gal are too uptight. The few measingly seconds of wait time I put to valuable use by taking a drag on my Chesterfield then a sip of my Latte from Starbucks .
