Shifter Missing Clip

So...long weekend so I tackled a long-overdue project to replace the (2) inner rubber shift boots. So, photo #1 & #2 show the first part. The small boot on the tranny tunnel was ripped in 3 places.

After I removed it, I realized that the container clip & ring are missing on the tranny. See photo #3. My idea to fix it is to build up the gap between the shifter and the first Cap with brass washers (the PO apparently had the tranny out and failed to replace the ring....so that is why this thing always leaked from the top of the tranny case).

Will my fix work? I cannot locate the correct parts.

-Rob

Also...can I simply remove the vent plugs on each side and clean the screens without some other device getting trampled?

Manual looks pretty straightforward.

What you need is the rubber seal that sits on top of the sliding plates; you can get one from International Auto Parts. By the way, even with that seal in place you will still be some leakage from around those plates. The inner boot needs to be securely clamped around the housing to prevent any leakage. My original clamp broke and I could not find another so I used the narrowist radiator clamp I could find and put duct tape around the base of the boot to protect it from being cut by the clamp. Everything is dry now.

You are missing two bits, a rubber seal and a cupped washer (for lack of better words).

Thanks for the replies. I made due with a rubber donut and washer.

Nice rubber boots, new band clamps and tomorrow I get to reassemble the dash.

I guess the upside besides the repaired boots is I get to clean those areas I can never reach.
