I started off deciding i would pull the intake plenum off my 82 and access things that way. After pulling most of the hoses I went for the bracket underneath. After dropping my wrench for the 6th time, i decided to pull the washer fluid reservoir and unscrew the solenoid from the starter.
Reservoir came off lickedy split. Disconnected battery after a neato spark-show and disconnected the power. Then i got my stubby standard screwdriver (what kind of sick commie uses recessed flathead screws in that?) and wiggled my hand through the various tubes, gadgets, gizmos etc and managed to match the driver to the screw by closing my eyes and using the force.
I then began to apply counterclockwise pressure. After 10 minutes of slipping, grunting, and cursing the sadist who decided to use standard screws on that I gave up.
So now i'm on to plan C!
I'll remove the starter, turn it pointing down, and access the screws to get the solenoid off without having to pull the starter out of the impossible coccoon of wires, tubing, rods, brackets & other parts in which it lives. I'll then replace the solenoid, put the new one back into the starter, and reinstall.
Unless someone else has a better idea
