Do All spiders have electric cooling fans?

I have been having trouble with the car running on the hot side, it hasn't overheated but still very hot. Upon inspection, i found that the electric fan wasn't working. But more importantly the radiator was completly plugged with an oily sludge. i believe if I clean the sludge off it will run MUCH cooler. Do I need the fan? I don't think it will be hard to fix, just time consuming, I don't want to miss any seat time.

My 85 has the fixed fan mounted to the engine. I thought only the S4's ( 91-94) had electric.

S3's with AC have an auxilliary electric fan in front of everything, but it's not meant to be the primary device.

That's what the mechanical fan w/shroud that gadwhite mentions is for.

ok, then it sounds like it would be safe to remove the electric fan until I get the a/c fixed
