Went and talked to the PO of my 78 Spider-info!

Pretty long talk with Sandy, the lady who owned my Spider.
My intro gives a basic history of the car but I'll recap.

Car was parked in 94 due to a fuel leak. Sandy bought the car when
it was 2 years old and only drove it summers.
I mention this because I just went to get the title and noted the mileage.
I assumed the 29K miles was 129K, Not that the car looks beat on
but I assumed it was driven more than it was. The title says 28K miles.

Sandy also said the car had a freshen up repaint. Her ex Husband had it done because of some paint issues on the topside.

I am starting to think this is a pretty original example.
Maybe you guys can say for sure. I plan on taking a bunch of pics before I clean off the dust and garage dirt for posterity. If any of you guiys aare restoring a Spider of this vintage let me know your picture requests for any detailing. Hopefully this thing will help with documentation.

The Torino guys are nutty for this stuff.
I notice my stickers are in different places than some in the sticker thread.
No idea if that's correct or what but I thought I'd mention it.

Anyway look for some (not so great) pics in the pictures section.
Ill get better ones later on as I do work on the car.
The bottom may be no help as far as reference as it was under coated.

That would likely be the factory undercoat, unless a PO had it shot over again with zbart or something.

Should be a sorta rubbery textured black stuff on pretty much everywhere 'cept suspension, wiring, and fuel hardlines.

You'll likely find about a 4-5" band of it running along the rocker sills under both doors from wheelwell to wheelwell as a sort of spray on rock/chip guard.

Small point of note:

Regardless of the presence of undercoat on the rocker sills (some got it there, some didn't) there should be what looks like grooves or seams toward the front and rear corners of the doors right in the rocker and on both sides of the car. (they would be the joints where the fender and rocker meet and where the rocker and quarter panel meet)

If they are missing, it's a pretty decent telltail that either (a) the car has had repairs (b) someone didn't realize they were supposed to be there while bodywroking for a respray, or (c) a+b

Alternate point of note:

I could be just talking out my butt, as I'm basing it on the S3, not the S2, but I'm in the mid to high 90% sure range as I'd swear I've seen both the undercoat and seams in pix of the older ones here on the board. (lil help? anyone? anyone?)

The repaint is failing now, not badly but its checking some. I think the painter may have gooked up those seams a bit but they are there.
I thought it was aftermarket rust proof because there are plugs in the doorframe on the rockers. The plugs show (a tad) when you look at the car from the side down-low.

One thing is the undercoating must be factory because it doesn't drown everything underneath. Its well placed and well done. Must have been done on a wednesday

Mmmmmmmmmm yeahh weellll, while lots of other makes like to focus on originality it's almost impossible with some of the Alfas!! I have an 86 that other swear is not because it doesn't have a 3rd brake light or a hard tail spoiler. It seems there are lots of items that went on some cars and not others, whatever was in the bin that day....ya know!?

Liberating.
Ford really didn't do that. It was all accounted for (a few mess ups slipped through but many are well documented.
My F100 pickup is so hacked I love it because originality is never gonna happen. The Torino crowd gets pretty caught up in that stuff.

Case in point, one of my e-buddy's cars:

eBay Motors: Ford : Torino (item 300231372488 end time Jun-16-08 09:58:28 PDT)

Hey Fairlane,

I've got one too. A 1968 Ford Fairlane with a 302, toploader 4 speed and wimpy 8" rear end.

What do you think this thing is worth? I've had it since I was 18, I'm 51 now!

It is butchered, but that is because it is a stunt car from the movie 'Eat My Dust' starring Ron Howard.

I bought a parts car (Torino) and replaced the entire wiring harness, doors fenders and hood because they were trashed when I ran it as a street stock race car at Irwindale Speedway. I used it as my College car when I was a student at Art Center College of Design. I became a Car Designer for small custom shops in So Cal and ended up working for George Barris. Finally the throwout bearing went out, for the 2nd time, and I just let it sit until now. I just rebuilt the motor and am slowly working on it as I work on my other project car, the 1981 Alfa Spider.

This old ford has a lot of history.

Thee value on the 68-69 cars just isn't there. A restored 302 car fetches under $8K . The 70-71 cars are where its at. Thee best place to get a good return would more likely be a movie buff in your case. I'm gonna say like $500-$1500 range. They just don't get much, The hard to replace parts on yours seem to be missing too. Grill surround chrome etc.

Its freakin cool to see those pics though. Heck I'd restore it

Thanks for the honest appraisal. I figured it was low to non-existant. I've got to stop watching Barret-Jackson Auctions of the Speed channel! I'm thinking of returning it to it's movie paint job and restoring it to that point with a perfect body and kustom interior. I think it's gonna be the tow car for the Alfa, once I decide to go weekend fun-racing.

What have you decided to do about your Spiders paint? Ripping off the old undercoat or patching? Are you going to stay with the original color? Alfisti love original. What color is it? Photos yet?
