Spider S3 electronic speedo problem
My Series 3 electronic speedo has just stopped working. Car hasn't been used for 3 years, and was ok this morning but is now stuck on 18mph. The cable is fine going into the electronic encoder, but because it is stuck on 18mph, I'm tending to think that the problem is in the speedo head itself.
Any suggestions?
(I'm in the UK, so although appreciated, please don't refer me to a specialist in Texas!)

Andy,
Take a close look at the indicator needle, see if it has gotten itself behind the little plastic stop.

Just to be sure, you are talking about a monopod version, not the dual pod correct? (some people mistake the exhaust sensor milage warning device for something to do with the speedometer, which other than the cables going to and from it, isn't)

Thanks for the suggestion. The needle is actually resting against the stop, as it should be at rest. Strange, but until I had this problem, I hadn't noticed that the rest position was this high (18mph). The speedo needle is therefore not necessarily stuck, as I first posted, but simply (!) not working.
The speedo cable is definitely turning, so the fault must therefore be with the encoder or the actual speedo or, of course, the wiring between them.
Can the speedo be stripped? (It is the mono pod version)

Definitely the monopod speedo.
Everything else in the speedo pod is working - gauges, lights etc. The only thing at fault is the speedo section - speed reading, trip mileage and total mileage are not working.
Tip for others who have this problem - Don't forget that a SatNav can also display your speed - Great benefit if you live in the UK with more speed cameras than lamposts........!

Check to make sure the end of the cable that goes into the encoder is not rounded off, this is a common problem. Also you can try unscrewing the encoder, turning it around, unscrewing the little cap and attaching the cable to that side.

Speedo Electonic Box
After you finish your diagnosis, if you determine that the little box is bad, I have a good one that I took of an '87 Quad that may solve your problem.
See pix, e-mail me or PM me.

You may want to check out this thread;
How to fix your slow reading speedometer or tachometer on 91-94 Spiders
This also works for the Series 3's monopods. Starting about post #8 for the speedo. Post #11 shows the adjustment screw for the speedometer. This may get your speedo working again, but probably not the odometer and trip meter. The odometer and trip meter may have a jammed or broken gear, the motor may be burned out, or it may not be connected anymore. Anyway, its worth a try.

BTW, if the mentioned thread helps you get your speed working, your SatNav can also help you calibrate the speedo to the correct speed.
