Spider S3 electronic speedo problem

My Series 3 electronic speedo has just stopped working. Car hasn't been used for 3 years, and was ok this morning but is now stuck on 18mph. The cable is fine going into the electronic encoder, but because it is stuck on 18mph, I'm tending to think that the problem is in the speedo head itself.

Any suggestions?

(I'm in the UK, so although appreciated, please don't refer me to a specialist in Texas!)

Take a close look at the indicator needle, see if it has gotten itself behind the little plastic stop.

Just to be sure, you are talking about a monopod version, not the dual pod correct? (some people mistake the exhaust sensor milage warning device for something to do with the speedometer, which other than the cables going to and from it, isn't)

Check to make sure the end of the cable that goes into the encoder is not rounded off, this is a common problem. Also you can try unscrewing the encoder, turning it around, unscrewing the little cap and attaching the cable to that side.

After you finish your diagnosis, if you determine that the little box is bad, I have a good one that I took of an '87 Quad that may solve your problem.

This also works for the Series 3's monopods. Starting about post #8 for the speedo. Post #11 shows the adjustment screw for the speedometer. This may get your speedo working again, but probably not the odometer and trip meter. The odometer and trip meter may have a jammed or broken gear, the motor may be burned out, or it may not be connected anymore. Anyway, its worth a try.
