front wheel bearing

I have a front inner wheel bearing on the drivers side of my 84 spider making a grinding sound. I pulled the hub off today and greased the bearings. The inner bearing doesn't roll very smooth. The bearing isn't apart and I didn't find any debris in the grease. I put it all back together and it still has a yucky grinding sound although spins well with no play. How do you remove the inner wheel bearing? can it be tapped out from the outter side of the hub? is their a grease seal and will it break and if so where can I get another I don't see them for sale at iap or centerline. Any advice I can get on this problem is greatly appreciated. I"m sure someone on here has the information I need.

Richard Dawson:

Let's look up at the board where we polled 100 different people and show us 'what model year'!

Centerline outer wheel bearing

Centerline inner wheel bearing

Seals I couldn't find right off as I figured it wasn't my job to look too awful hard, but they have them. Just call and ask. IAP has the stuff too. Try harder when looking through the online catalogs, or call and ask.

In fact if you order by phone, they'll likely ask YOU if you want/need a set rather than you asking if they have them.

The inner seal has to come out to get the inner bearing out.

One way is to remove the hub and knock it out from the front with a drift as you surmised.

You do have instructions on how to properly re-tighten the hub nut don't you? (it definitely ain't done like any 'merican car you nmay have ever done, and in fact using the same method on the Alfa can potentially destroy a new set of bearings right quick)

One thing about wheel bearings--they should be perfect in feel and appearance. Anything else is a dangerous problem waiting to happen. If they don't pass either criteria, they should be replaced along with their race.

You can pretty much push the races out with a punch, just be certain not to marr your hub. The inner bearing can be pulled off with a three jaw puller.

I'm posting some pics of the process in my thread: Danyl's Yellow Spider Project.
