Ticking sound.....
On acceleration, especially in 1st and 2nd gears, sometimes in 3rd. Sounds like my tappets/lifters did not my Miata when the oil was thin/tired. Right behind the steering wheel.
Ideas? Exhaust manifold?
If its the tappets/lifters, how do you fix, just adjust/tighten 'em, or replace?
Thanks.

I'd start by checking the exhaust header nuts for tightness and the tubes for cracks.

Good call.
Start at #4 rather than #1 onaconna it seems to be the one that likes to loosen up first. (you can also look for soot or dirty deposits on the side of the block under the manifold to get an idea if/where blowby may be occuring)

A bit off the wall, but as you said you heard the noise behind the steering wheel, could it be speedo cable clicking ? Does the sound rise in tempo with engine speed (RPM's), or road speed ?

It builds on acceleration in the lower gears. It mat be a crack on the downpipe(s) behind the manifold..........I scraped the bottom underestimating the slope of exit in a gas station last week
Tom, will check m/nuts too. Thanks.

Well there you go, Keith.
Are the nuts brass? If not they're probably going to loosen up again.

As they are the same sized studs as the intake manifold, I'd hazard the torque would be the same: 12ft/lbs (the concern is more about not ripping the studs out of the head, rather than having something fall off)
However the number really doesn't matter as you'll never get a socket in there to actually use a torque wrench, so 'tight but not reefed' (as in don't lean on the things) is the more realistic tension to be applied.
